What we collect

Nothing that identifies you personally. There are no reader accounts, no comment system, no newsletter sign-up, and no advertising network on this site, so the usual reasons a news site holds personal data do not apply here.

The database behind the site stores articles, categories, tags, and the editorial notes our own staff write. It has no table of readers, because there is nothing to put in one.

Cookies and local storage

We set no cookies for readers. Your choice of light or dark theme is kept in your browser's local storage, which never leaves your device and is not readable by us or by anyone else.

Editors signing in to the private admin area receive a session cookie from Cloudflare Access. That applies to staff accounts only and has no bearing on reading the site.

Analytics

We use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page views without cookies, without fingerprinting, and without following anyone between sites. What we see is aggregate: which pages were read, roughly where in the world from, and what referred them. We cannot tell one reader from another in it, and neither can Cloudflare.

Server logs

The site runs on Cloudflare's network, which processes the technical details of every request (IP address, user agent, the URL asked for) in order to deliver pages and to block attacks. That processing is Cloudflare's, under their terms, and is the ordinary cost of being reachable on the internet. We do not build our own log of readers on top of it.

Links to other sites

Every article links to its sources, and following a link puts you on someone else's site under someone else's policy.

Some articles also carry affiliate links, marked where they appear. Following one may let that retailer set its own cookie so a later purchase is credited to us. What comes back to us is a commission report of totals, never who bought what.

Article images are usually served from this domain, but a piece may embed an image or a video hosted elsewhere. Loading one tells that host your IP address and browser, exactly as visiting it directly would. Our fonts are served from this domain, so reading the site makes no request to a font or script CDN.

Search

The search box queries our own database from our own server. Queries are not stored, not sent anywhere else, and not associated with anything about you.

Email

If you write to us, we keep the message so we can answer it and so we have a record of a tip or a correction. We do not add the address to a mailing list, because there is no mailing list.

Your requests, and changes to this notice

Since we hold no reader data, there is generally nothing to hand over or delete. If you believe we hold something of yours, write to contact@screenchronicle.com and we will look and tell you either way.

Changes to this notice are made on this page, with the date above updated. There is no archive of previous versions.
